April Prepares her Green Traffic Light and the World Thinks, “Go”
In April, we celebrate Earth Day and Health Day, as well as the Month of Hope . . . April reminds us to care of our natural wealth – health, and to celebrate our Earth. To me, it is a month of youth and new beginnings. It welcomes the Spring, season where the flowers bloom and the birds hatch. It reminds me to smell the roses and enjoy the moment, because no matter how hectic it can get, April’s fresh air can help us combat stress and become more creative and efficient.
Bringing awareness to healthy skin is part of the highlight of the month. There are many aspects involved in making sure our skin is in good condition. Regardless, today I wanted to talk about hormones: in particular, estrogen. Estrogen is naturally produced by both, men and women; and has a great impact on the skin. It also helps us maintain our reproductive system, heal our skin, and protect our bones. As we age, and estrogen levels decline, the skin tends to become more dry, fragile, and loose. Loss of estrogen is a major cause of sagging, dry skin in women after 40.
However, thanks to technology we now have many treatment options to choose from that can help us take care of our skin and maintain its youthful characteristics. What this implies in terms of skin treatments is that we are able to cater them to address these hormonal fluctuations. For example, as we age and estrogen levels decline, we still want anti-aging treatments that give us a refreshed look, but that don’t cause irritation in a now more sensitive skin. Products to apply to our skin are also an important part of the equation. For example, retinaldehyde, a gentler derivative of Vitamin A may be preferred to Retinol. We may consume products and vitamins that enhance collagen production, such as Vitamin C. The good news is that we can maintain our skin looking healthy and youthful. It is now up to us to make the right choices as we embrace our journey and its natural changes.
