Breast Cancer Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Cancer Institute, 12.9% of women born in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point during their lives. In other words, one in eight women born today has a chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The risk has increased slightly from many years ago but has remained steady in the past few years. The World Health Organization considers age, obesity, family history, radiation exposure, post-menopausal hormone therapy, tobacco use, and reproductive history as factors that can affect the development of breast cancer.
Despite the news above, technology in screening for the disease and treating it has improved significantly. Gone are the days in which radiation would most likely result in damage to the heart valves. For those that actually develop the disease, there are now many alternatives to enhance the quality of their lives. Vitamins can be customized, skincare can treat the effects of radiation, radiofrequency can help with vaginal dryness, and microneedling can help with hair loss. Furthermore, screening tests can help evaluate the possibility of recurrence and help make better medical decisions.
Regardless of the good news, our goal today is to promote the importance of screening and of undergoing mammograms. Med Aesthetics Miami supports and joins the fight against breast cancer. We can still control many lifestyle decisions that can improve health outcomes, such as eating healthy, avoiding alcohol, and exercising. In our opinion, the biggest fight is the mental fight. The decision to strengthen our minds to make the right choices regarding our health; and if confronted with the potential bad diagnosis, to fight the disease and all its accompanying fears is within our power.
